GUEST POST : By David Jones of David Jones Photography

My name is David Jones. I’ve been photographing weddings in and around Charlottesville for the past twenty years. I have photographed well over three hundred fifty weddings, and I love capturing a bride’s day by combining both a traditional and photojournalistic style. I am writing this short post with a word of advice for potential brides-to-be…

If you are planning an outdoor wedding in Charlottesville, make your plans and then relax and go with the day! Certainly, we’ll all keep our fingers crossed that you’ll end up with beautiful weather, but sometimes Mother Nature has different plans!

I shot Lauren and Jonathan’s wedding on July 5th, 2008. They had made all the necessary arrangements to ensure a memorable day for all involved, but the one thing they couldn’t control was the weather. They were married at University Baptist Church down on the corner, and towards the end of their ceremony, the skies opened up and it POURED for the next couple of hours! After we had taken the traditional posed shots at the church, Lauren asked me if, due to the falling torrents, we should just bag the plan to head over to The Rotunda for some shots. I told Lauren that if we bagged it, we would miss a beautiful opportunity for some wonderfully original shots. Well, to Lauren’s (and Jonathan’s) credit, they said, “Let’s go for it,” and the entire wedding party (ten in all) piled into the limo, umbrellas in hand, and we headed to The Lawn for some beautiful shots.

I was so impressed with Lauren and Jonathan’s attitude on the day of their wedding. They had no control over what was happening regarding the weather, and so they simply let it go. They jumped right into the experience! They lived in the moment! They laughed and loved in the rain that afternoon with their entire wedding party (who, of course, took their cues from the bride and groom), and I think their pictures are absolutely unique and beautiful. I have photographed many bad weather weddings over the past twenty years, and it is always a shame for me when I see the weather impact a bride’s attitude on her wedding day. Lauren’s beautiful spirit and smile never faded, and her photos were absolutely stunning! Follow her lead ladies…Do your best to ensure a wonderful day, but let go of the things that you can’t control. And smile!
