“… just wanted to say how different each of the cakes are, just like all of the brides and grooms I meet with. We can go classic and traditional, or modern and funky. Groom’s cakes also seem to be all the rage…the pig and the boot were both surprises to the groom on the wedding night or rehearsal dinner.

…inspiration can come from anywhere and everywhere!… the grapes cake was inspired by Jennifer Carroll’s invitation… the dragonfly cake was because of little gold dragonflies subtly incorporated into the entire wedding. For the boot cake, the bride mailed me the groom’s actual boot!”

Advice from Teri:  The Common Sense Approach

• Taste:  Don’t settle.  Wedding Cake can and should be moist and yummy.  There is no excuse for dry or tasteless wedding cake.
• Service:  How are you treated when you call for information, e-mail, or walk-in; at the tasting?  When you leave, do you feel you have full knowledge of everything that your wedding cake can be?  Do you feel your wedding cake is important to your designer?  There is nothing worse than spending your money where you do not feel important, appreciated, or comfortable with your vendor.
• Value:  Look for value…..what are you getting that is of value to you?  Are you buying “just a cake”, or are you buying a gourmet wedding cake for your family and friends to ooh and ahh over?  What gives you more for your money?
• Reputation:  The Day After….& Happily Ever After….What will your family & friends say about your wedding cake?  They will remember and continue to talk about it for many years, good or bad.

Just this week I noticed that 3 of my favorite local (non-photographer) wedding-related colleagues have started blogs recently. (I say “non-photographer” because it seems the photographers all got started blogging earlier than most everyone else!) Let me share their beautiful work with you in the order that I discovered them myself…

First, I visited Anita Gupta’s site, Maliha Creations, because I’d met with a new bride on Sunday who was interested in baking and I wanted to send her a link to Anita’s site. When I got there I saw that, indeed, Anita had started blogging in May and has been posting stories and photos of her creations since then… so much fun!

Next, I got an e-mail from Pat’s Floral Designs (Pat and Sherry) announcing their newly designed website… which I visited right away and it is spectacular! In their navigation I saw a curious link to “In Bloom” which turned out to link to their brand new blog that they’ve already been posting to with lots of beautiful photos… it’s beautiful!

Then today I hopped over to Jennifer Carroll’s site and found that she has several YouTube videos posted plus her new blog that’s not much more than a month old and is already filled with fantastic photos of her place settings, invitations, linens, food and all the other details that she is so incredibly talented at creating!

So welcome to the wonderful world of wedding blogging Anita, Pat, Sherry and Jennifer… isn’t it fun?

Last weekend I had my first UVA Garden wedding of the season and it was, without a doubt, the loveliest one I’ve done there. Amber & Charlie were married in Garden IX which is a Garden at the far end of the West Lawn that I’d never been in before. The Altar table with tall vases containing white orchids was created by Pat’s Floral Designs. The curtain of hanging shells behind the altar made a beautiful tinkling sound throughout the ceremony as Charlie and Amber exchanged their vows. To honor Amber’s Filipino heritage we included 2 lovely rituals called the veil and the cord which were facilitated by an aunt and uncle who accepted the role of Sponsors for the newly married couple.

After the ceremony the couple’s reception was held just next door in Garden VII… another lovely University garden I hadn’t visited before. Jennifer Carroll of Jennifer Carroll Events had absolutely outdone herself for this garden wedding. The tables, flowers, menus, lanterns in the trees, orchids and candles floating in huge clear glass vases… just everything was done to perfection. Everywhere you looked the garden environment blended seamlessly into Jennifer’s beautiful, artistic design… made me smile just to look at it.

Amber and Charlie had a very unique wedding cake that I wanted to share too… created by Anita Gupta of Maliha Creations… in the shape of the University of Virginia Rotunda. So, now I know for sure that there is no cake that Anita can’t create… I wonder what Thomas Jefferson would say?

Anita of Maliha Creations brought a sampling of her incredible cakes to the Bridal Show this past Sunday. I quite literally couldn’t take my eyes off of them! I think of myself as a relatively creative (crafty) person but, honestly, I can’t even fathom how she makes these spectacular creations. And guess what? They’re not only beautiful their delicious… so to my way of thinking that makes them perfect!

The other bonus you get from Anita is her warm personality and beautiful smile… so, if you are in the market for a wedding cake, a groom’s cake… or a cake for any other occasion I would not hesitate to invite you to contact Anita. Oh, and be sure to look at her website too because there is a gallery of photos of cakes she has created and, my favorite part is her “About” page where she divulges her inspiration for her work.
