Chalkboards continue to be all the rage and what could be easier than chalkboard signs for your wedding? Used as table signs, menus, welcome and/or bon voyage messages, and everything in between, there is no end to the flexibility of chalk boards! Best of all you can make them fit any style and space from casual to formal, big to small. Want to give it a try? Here’s a super easy tutorial on making a DIY Chalkboard Sign from a 5 x 7 frame.

:: INSTRUCTIONS ::
STEP ONE :
Remove glass and any inserts from frame. The back of my frame was hard and flat, a perfect surface for my chalkboard. If your frame backing isn’t useable for some reason, I would recommend using a piece of chipboard instead. Shake can of chalk paint and, using a sponge brush for smoothness, apply paint to backing. Don’t paint too heavily and be sure to keep your strokes nice and smooth. You can always paint extra coats if necessary (although one coat seemed to work fine for me, time will tell how that one coat holds up over continuous uses…). Allow paint to dry. My paint says that it needs 3 days to fully cure so plan accordingly when you begin this project.
STEP TWO :
This is probably the MOST IMPORTANT step so please don’t skip it! Season your cured chalkboard by gently rubbing it with chalk. I hold the chalk on it’s side (long side on the board) to cover more area and just go up and back, side to side, and round and round to be sure that I’m getting a thorough coating of chalk over the entire board surface.
Wipe with a paper towel and you are ready to create your masterpiece!
These make great keepsakes to give to special friends and helpers after your wedding too. I hope you enjoy this fun and very simple wedding project: DIY chalkboard signs!
